Springtime is finally here and that means it's time to start routinely running your sprinklers again. After the long duration and hibernation of the winter, your sprinklers may need some repairs and general maintenance in order to function at an optimum level. It can be difficult to notice any malfunctions or potential issues right off the bat without professional eyes, but there are a few critical signs to be on the lookout for as you prepare to run your sprinkler system again this year.
Uneven distribution of water.
Look closely at the spout of the sprinkler head when you turn it on and it begins dispensing water. If you notice an uneven distribution of water, that means it’s time for a repair. This a common problem that is caused by a number of varying factors. After a long and cold winter, areas of the sprinkler can get damaged due to freezing temperatures. We recommend that you watch your sprinklers closely the first time you turn them on for the season to determine if this is a problem.
Pressure levels.
If your sprinklers are not dispensing water at their usual pressure level, that means there is an internal issue within the system. This can be due to a number of different factors including a disturbance in the irrigation pipes. Low pressure levels are particularly destructive and can cause your lawn to dry out in certain areas because the stream from the sprinkler cannot reach its intended areas. It is relatively easy to spot low pressure levels. We recommend that after you turn your system on for the year, stand by for about a half hour and inspect the pressure of each one.
Dry areas in your lawn.
Like conventional yard signs you see on the side of the street, this gives you an indication if your sprinklers are working properly. If you begin to notice dried out grass in your yard it is likely that your sprinkler system is malfunctioning. Typically, there will be more than one patch of grass that hasn’t been receiving the right amount of nourishment. Keep a keen eye out for these as the season goes on, and correct it immediately once you notice it. Routine upkeep of your sprinkler system can prevent long term yard damage and ultimately save you money in the end.
